How do I find a job?
Advice For Studio Positions:
Once your skills are Studio Ready
the two best places to find openings are;
- The Animation Spreadsheet - Here
This is updated fairly consistantly and has a lot of what is gloabally available in Animation/Games/VFX - Linked-In - Here
I recommend following studios you are interested in working at to see their job and intership advertisements.
Additonally I recomend following CartoonRecruit.com on Linked-In as well as the other social media you may be on. They are quite good at sharing info about oppertunites.
I DO NOT recommend any service that asks you to pay to get access to listings. 9/10 They are a scam and don't have your interests at heart.
Networking
Networking is an important part of this industry. Sometimes who you know can help you land a role. Openings are often anounced internaly and some staff are asked about recommendations even before jobs are posted publicly. There are many ways to start networking. These are the main ones.
- School - This is the most passive way to grow your networking. Your fellow classmates are likely to be your future coworkers. You also likely will be working on a group project with them during your time in school. It's a good idea to not burn bridges unless the situation warrents it cause you never know who will be in a position to recomend you in future. (I have some stories about this one.)
While we are a coompitive industry those who last really are the ones who want to see everyone succeed. We raise eachother up - Going to Industry Events - Film Festivals, Job Fairs, Life Drawing sessions and other industry focued events (Like TAAFI and CTN) are great places to talk to studios and meet others in the same sitation as you. I will try and get a full list of events in future. For now, you can find a list of animation film festivals here.
- Social Media - Results will very but it is a good place to connect and interact with others in this field. Just be conscientious about how you act. Don't go trying to slide into the DMs of other perfesonals to gass yourself up. It's not a good look and making friends isnt about disengenous connections. Be mindful. I have found it is often better to make latteral connections and hype eachother up.
What Kinds of Jobs exist ?
Wip section. I plan to list the majority of roles here in starting with the 2D industry. Then add what the avarage job requirements are based on from actual job posting from various companies. This one will take a while to get in place.
How much does Animation pay?
Animation Rates differ wildly depending on experience, geographical location, full time vs freelance, and if there is a union where you are. I recomend starting with the union pay structures as they plubic and are easy to reference but just keep in mind they are for those specific reagions. Iatse 983 in Canada(starts on page21) and 839 The guild in LA. These two can be a good example of the geographic pay differences for the same roles.
